Kitchen Makeover on a Budget

Are you looking to update your kitchen? It may be that your kitchen is not particularly old, but cupboard hinges are coming loose, paint is wearing out and the place feels a little lifeless. Given how central a part of any home a kitchen is, it’s a room that needs to be kept a clean, attractive and healthy environment for everyone. When it comes to small updates, you don’t need to break the bank, but replacing a few aspects can really make a difference to the comfort and satisfaction it brings. Here at kitchen fitters Hull we’ve got some ideas for you to think about if you’re thinking about giving your kitchen a quick makeover.

Paint
A shiny new coat of paint can completely lift the place and give it a new feel. This is the most inexpensive idea, as a tub of paint is incredibly cheap relative to the overall value of your kitchen. All it requires is a little time elbow grease to get nice even coats. You can go for new walls, with perhaps a slightly brighter shade of colour than before, or maybe even the cabinets. Of course, if you have wooden finish cabinets, you probably don’t want to be risking hugely altering the look with paint, but certainly for painted cabinets, a new paint job is a great idea.

Transform your lighting
Especially if you’re looking for a change as winter approaches, you certainly don’t want to be stuck with old and dingy lights. A kitchen should be a bright and vibrant place, and new lighting doesn’t have to be expensive. Recessed lighting across the ceiling is the minimalist approach, not taking up and space and providing a modern, well lit look. If you find these lights a bit in-your-face, look for decorative ceiling lights that add a bit of texture and style to the room. If you do prefer a more old-fashioned look, pendants are becoming a lot more popular – not only are they a classy feature for dining areas, many nowadays are enjoying the quirkiness of, for example, factory style pendants from past eras. Make sure these fit the style of your kitchen! We’ll have a full article on lighting options in the future!

Add a ceiling rack
This is a great way to utilise space, make everything particularly accessible, and simply give a very homely feel. A ceiling rack for pots and pans can totally change the look and feel of the kitchen for a small outlay. Whether you go for a more traditional feel in wood, or more modern with metal, make sure you choose a style that matches the look and feel of your kitchen and suddenly it’ll seem like its always been there! We love ceiling racks because of their functionality and how they free up cupboard space elsewhere. And who doesn’t like extra space in their kitchen!

Change your worktops
Worktops need to be made of quality material in order to last over time, given they take the brunt of wear and tear in most kitchens. Worn out worktops can make your kitchen feel a little lifeless if they get to the stage where they’re faded, damaged or stained. New worktops are one of the best ways to make a worn-out kitchen feel new again. If you’re interested in the most cost-effective solution, laminate tends to be the cheapest – and if maintaining the same layout, it makes the kitchen fitter’s job easier to follow the original pattern! Don’t let the price fool you though, laminate is popular not just because of cost, but because of versatility as well. From being easy to clean, hard-wearing, to being able to be made to look like more expensive materials, laminate is certainly a great option when looking to refresh the worktops. Go for good quality laminate that lives up to the promise, so you don’t have to worry about it being too susceptible to heat or having a short lifespan. If you want something with real quality, granite and stone really make an impact and have a very good lifespan.

Buy new appliances
Ovens, microwaves, fridges. They can all lose their quality over time. Particularly with ovens, they can be difficult to clean and maintain. Changing your appliances is a great way to refresh your kitchen without having to change any furniture. Make sure you’re careful with getting the sizes right so everything fits nicely where you’d like it to. Consider that freestanding appliances are easy to replace, rather than built-in units that can be relatively tricky.

These are just a few simple ideas to help bring life back to your kitchen for a relatively small cost, if its feeling a little worse for wear! With just a little imagination, you can, for a relatively small outlay, really create the feeling of new in your kitchen. We’ll be bringing more ideas in the future!
